So you think you know Minesweeper? Swept your share of mines on your blisteringly fast 1995 IBM desktop, have you? You haven't seen nothin' yet. One word: Deathmatch.
Minesweeper XL's Deathmatch mode is an online head-to-head race to completion. Both you and your foe's progress is displayed atop the screen…as if the intensity of single player minesweeper isn't enough. As you watch your challenger soar towards completion, the added pressure will force you to play faster and take bigger risks. Thanks to Game Center integration, you can play against a friend or get matched up against randoms.
We decided to put the game through its paces by holding a 2012 Intra-Office Free Apps Arcade Minesweeper XL Tournament (to air soon on ESPN…check your local listings). Each match turned into a gritty slugfest full of lead changes and narrow victories. Deathmatch is a rollercoaster; in any given match you'll be sure you've won or lost on twenty separate occasions.
A word to the wise: when you're sitting at 99% completion and laughing because your friend keeps going BOOM at 5%, take a deep breath and show some class. There's a good chance that you're one tap away from being right there with him.
